Each patient referred to our CyberKnife centre is discussed in a meeting comprising multidisciplinary medical team(please see our list of attending doctors below). Each case is evaluated individually as to the appropriateness of Cyberknife treatment. If the case is accepted then a focal consultant team takes over the care of the patient as outlined below.

The consulting team consists of the consultant oncologist (with specialist knowledge in focal radiation treatment methods) and/or specialist surgeon, physicists (with expert training in this particular CyberKnife technique) and radiographers - fully trained radiotherapy technologists who are responsible for the 'setting-up' of the patient correctly for the procedure and for dose delivery, paying special attention to accurate tracking of the tumour throughout.

Before treatment begins, the physicists and clinician will have predetermined a plan (mapped the tumour and adjacent sensitive normal organs/tissues that must not be overdosed, and produced a dose-plan by which cancerocidal radiation doses may be safely delivered by a selected array of pencil beams/rays of radiation). The exact array of beams will have been chosen after multiple iterations of possible combinations of such rays has been scrutinised and optimised with the help of the computer. The team members will ensure that the patient is positioned for treatment. Sometimes, prior to the procedure, metallic fiducial seeds are pre-implanted into the tumour environs around the tumour to assist the accurate localisation and tracking of the tumour; this is achieved at a separate session before the treatment day. A specialist radiologist is responsible for such a procedure.
